Pont de Bir-Hakeim
Built between 1903 and 1905 on the site of an 1878 footbridge, the Pont de Bir-Hakeim has two levels: road and pedestrians below, the elevated line 6 métro above, carried on a rhythmic cast-iron colonnade that creates a striking perspective.
It rests on the Île aux Cygnes and bears four sculpted groups symbolising Science, Labour, Electricity and Commerce. Renamed in 1948 in tribute to the battle of Bir Hakeim, it has become a recurring film location, from Inception to Last Tango in Paris. Tip: the walkway beneath the viaduct on the right-bank side gives the most photographed framing, especially at sunrise.
