Pont Marie
Completed in 1635, the Pont Marie is named after the contractor Christophe Marie, who developed the Île Saint-Louis and financed the bridge. It was first covered with fifty two-storey houses, until the flood of 1658 swept away around twenty of them along with their occupants.
Its five uneven arches and empty niches — the planned statues were never installed — make it one of the most elegant bridges in Paris. It is also the oldest still intact in its original form after the Pont Neuf. Tip: local tradition says to make a wish while crossing with your eyes closed; the view of the island quays is especially fine in the evening.
