Pont au Double
The Pont au Double owes its name to the "double denier", the toll paid to cross it in the 17th century. Back then it linked the Hôtel-Dieu hospital, which occupied both banks, to the forecourt of Notre-Dame.
The present cast-iron bridge dates from 1883. Pedestrian-only, it offers one of the most direct views of Notre-Dame's apse and flying buttresses, with the Square Jean-XXIII in the foreground.
Tip: cross it early in the morning, before tour groups reach the forecourt. Allow 5 minutes, then continue along Quai de Montebello to Shakespeare and Company.
