Place de l'Odéon
Laid out as a half-moon in 1779 in front of the Odéon theatre, the square forms a homogeneous neoclassical ensemble: arcaded façades, uniform heights, six streets radiating from the forecourt. It is one of the rare Parisian squares designed as a single piece with its monument.
The theatre, twice burnt and rebuilt identically, was one of the hotbeds of May 1968, occupied for several weeks. The Café Voltaire on the corner hosted Diderot and later the Symbolists. Tip: the square is very quiet in the morning; carry on to the Luxembourg Gardens, two minutes away along rue de Vaugirard.
