Place de l'Alma
At the foot of Avenue Montaigne and facing the Seine, Place de l'Alma is dominated by the Flame of Liberty, a replica of the Statue of Liberty's flame given by the United States. By the sad accident of 1997, it has become a spontaneous memorial to Lady Diana, who died in the tunnel below.
It is also a strategic crossroads between the Champs-Élysées, the Trocadéro and the Eiffel Tower. The zouave of the Pont de l'Alma, below, has served for a century as a gauge of the Seine's floods.
