The second largest church in Paris after Notre-Dame, Saint-Sulpice took more than a century to build, from 1646 to 1780, under six successive architects. Its façade with two asymmetrical towers — the south tower was never finished — deliberately breaks with Baroque in favour of an antique-inspired classicism.

It holds three murals by Delacroix in the Chapel of the Holy Angels, including Jacob Wrestling with the Angel, an 1862 Cavaillé-Coll organ among the largest in the world, and the 1727 astronomical gnomon, a brass line used to determine the equinox. Tip: entry is free; the Sunday midday organ recitals cost nothing.
