Conciergerie

The Conciergerie occupies the lower part of the Palais de la Cité, residence of the kings of France until the 14th century. What survives includes the Hall of the Men-at-Arms, a vast Gothic space of 1,800 m² completed around 1310, one of the largest medieval civil halls in Europe, and Saint Louis's kitchens.

Turned into a prison when the monarchy left the island, it became under the Terror the antechamber of the guillotine: nearly 2,800 people awaited trial here, among them Marie-Antoinette, Danton and Robespierre. The queen's cell has been reconstructed. Tip: a combined ticket with the Sainte-Chapelle, fifty metres away, costs much less than two separate entries.
