Built in just seven years, from 1241 to 1248, on Saint Louis's orders, the Sainte-Chapelle was conceived as a monumental reliquary for the Crown of Thorns, bought from the emperor of Constantinople for more than the building itself cost.
The upper chapel is the culmination of Rayonnant Gothic: walls give way to 1,113 stained-glass scenes across 600 m², two-thirds of them original, telling the biblical story from Genesis to the Resurrection. The structure holds together thanks to a system of iron ties. Tip: come on a sunny day in late morning, when the west rose blazes; security queues can exceed thirty minutes without a timed ticket.
