The square is named after Pierre Georges, known as Colonel Fabien, a communist resistance fighter who died in 1944. It is dominated by the headquarters of the French Communist Party.
Designed by Oscar Niemeyer and completed in 1971, the building unfolds a wavy glass façade and a half-buried white dome, the only example of the Brazilian architect's style in Paris.
Tip: the façade can be photographed from the square at any time; the interior only opens during Heritage Days. Allow 10 minutes.
