The Village Saint-Paul occupies the former grounds of the Hôtel Saint-Pol, Charles V's residence in the 14th century. Badly run down by the 20th century, the area was rehabilitated in the 1970s into a set of five interior courtyards linked by passages, opening onto rue Saint-Paul, rue Charlemagne and rue de l'Ave-Maria.
