Designed by André Le Nôtre between 1669 and 1673, the Grande Terrasse of Saint-Germain-en-Laye runs for nearly two kilometres above a loop of the Seine. It is one of the largest designed belvederes in the Paris region.
From the parapet the view takes in the valley, the hillsides and, on clear days, La Défense and Montmartre on the horizon. The straight, lime-lined promenade skirts the state forest. Tip: free access; come late afternoon when light rakes across the valley, and arrive by RER A right below the château.
