Rue des Barres
Behind Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais, Rue des Barres is one of the most medieval streets in Paris: cobblestones, half-timbered houses, old lanterns and the Gothic chevet of the church as a backdrop. Its name is said to come from the "barres", the taverns that once livened up the district.
It is one of photographers' favourite streets, especially in the late afternoon when the light grazes the stones. The calm is almost unreal, a stone's throw from the Marais and the Hôtel de Ville.
