Promenade Plantée
Created in 1993 on the former Vincennes railway line, the Promenade Plantée is the world's first elevated greenway, the one that inspired New York's High Line. From the Viaduc des Arts to Porte de Vincennes, it unrolls 4.7 kilometres of gardens above the city.
The Viaduc des Arts, whose arches house craft workshops, marks the start of the route on the Bastille side. Along the walk, views over the rooftops of the 12th arrondissement and the gardens below reveal an unexpected Paris, far from tourist flows.
Tip: allow 1.5 hours for the full route, or 45 minutes to Porte Dorée. Ideal starting point: Avenue Daumesnil, just behind the Opéra Bastille.
