Place Saint-Michel
Created during the Haussmann works in 1855, Place Saint-Michel is dominated by Gabriel Davioud's monumental fountain, where the archangel defeats the demon between two red marble columns. Designed to hide a blank gable wall, it has become the emblematic meeting point of the Left Bank.
At the end of the Pont Saint-Michel, the square opens onto the Latin Quarter and its pedestrian streets. Plaques recall the fighting of the Liberation of Paris in August 1944. Tip: very busy in the evening, it is far more pleasant early in the morning, and it is the best starting point for walking up towards Cluny and the Sorbonne.
