Place du Tertre
Once the main square of the village of Montmartre, place du Tertre was the administrative heart of the commune before it was absorbed into Paris in 1860. Its name simply refers to the hillock, the "tertre". Around its cafés passed many of the painters who built the district's reputation in the early 20th century.
Today around 140 artists share pitches allocated by the city, two painters per spot per half-day. Portraitists and caricaturists work alongside landscape painters. Tip: the square is saturated in the afternoon; come before 10 am to see it almost empty, then walk on to rue Norvins and the church of Saint-Pierre de Montmartre, one of the oldest in the capital, right next door.
