Designed in the late 18th century by Soufflot at the same time as the Panthéon, the square forms a remarkably coherent neoclassical ensemble: the domed monument at its centre, the 5th arrondissement town hall and the law faculty facing each other as twin buildings, and opposite them the Sainte-Geneviève library.
At the top of the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, it opens onto a clear view down rue Soufflot to the Luxembourg Gardens. Tip: one of the few places in the Latin Quarter with enough distance to photograph a whole monument; come late in the day, when the stone turns golden.
