Passage des Panoramas
Opened in 1799, the Passage des Panoramas is the oldest covered arcade still in use in Paris. It takes its name from the two rotundas that framed its entrance, where huge panoramic canvases of cities were displayed, a star attraction of the Directory period.
In 1817 it became one of the first public spaces in Paris lit by gas. Its maze of side galleries now holds stamp dealers, engravers — including the Stern printing house, here since 1834 — bistros and small tables much in demand in the evening. Tip: come late afternoon to eat in one of the galleries, then continue through the Passage Jouffroy directly opposite, across boulevard Montmartre.
