Bagatelle owes its château to a wager: in 1777 the Count of Artois promised Marie-Antoinette it would be built in under three months; nine hundred workers did it in sixty-four days. The estate was later turned into an English-style landscape garden.

Its 24 hectares in the Bois de Boulogne bring together a rose garden of more than 10,000 roses, grottoes, waterfalls, an iris garden and free-roaming peacocks. Tip: the roses peak in June, during the international new rose competition; entry is charged in high season and the main gate is on route de Sèvres-à-Neuilly.
