Housed in a former hunting lodge of the Duke of Valmy on the edge of the Bois de Boulogne, the Musée Marmottan Monet holds the world's largest collection of works by Claude Monet. This is where you will find "Impression, Sunrise", the painting that gave Impressionism its name in 1874, bequeathed by the painter's son Michel Monet.
In the basement, a gallery modelled on the Orangerie displays the Water Lilies and canvases from the garden at Giverny. The museum also keeps a unique set of works by Berthe Morisot and medieval illuminations inherited from collector Paul Marmottan.
