At the end of a cobbled lane lined with lime trees on rue Chaptal, this green-shuttered house from 1830 was the studio of painter Ary Scheffer. Every Friday he received Chopin, George Sand, Delacroix, Liszt, Rossini, Turgenev and Dickens — hence the museum's name.
The ground floor evokes George Sand through jewellery, portraits, furniture and casts of her hand and Chopin's; upstairs are Scheffer's works. The surrounding Nouvelle Athènes district was then the artists' quarter. Tip: the permanent collections are free, and the tearoom in the garden conservatory is one of the most charming stops in the 9th arrondissement.
