Musée Cognacq-Jay
The Musée Cognacq-Jay presents the collection assembled by Ernest Cognacq and Marie-Louise Jaÿ, founders of La Samaritaine, bequeathed to the city of Paris in 1928. It is entirely devoted to the European 18th century: Watteau, Boucher, Fragonard, Chardin, Greuze, Tiepolo, Canaletto, along with pastels, Meissen porcelain, gold boxes and stamped furniture.
Since 1990 it has occupied the Hôtel Donon, a 16th-century house of small panelled rooms on exactly the scale of a collector's cabinet — which makes the visit surprisingly intimate. Tip: the permanent collections are free and the museum remains one of the least crowded in the Marais; an hour is enough, ideally paired with Carnavalet a hundred metres away.
