Mur de la Paix
Installed in 2000 on the Champ-de-Mars, facing the École Militaire, the Wall for Peace was conceived by artist Clara Halter and architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte as a contemporary echo of the Western Wall. The word "peace" was inscribed on its glass panels in 49 languages and 18 alphabets.
Visitors were invited to slip messages into the gaps. Designed as a temporary work, it stood for twenty years before being dismantled in 2020 to clear the vista, and later re-erected in Vitry-sur-Seine. Tip: on site only the base recalls its position; the esplanade, however, offers one of the best aligned views of the Eiffel Tower.
