Created in 1794 with animals seized from royal menageries and fairgrounds, the Ménagerie of the Jardin des Plantes is one of the oldest zoos in the world still operating. From the outset it was conceived as a scientific site as much as a place to stroll.
Its historic buildings — rotunda, monkey house, vivarium, big-cat house — now shelter mainly small and medium-sized species involved in conservation programmes: snow leopards, orangutans, oryx, rare turtles and reptiles. Tip: less spectacular than a large wildlife park but very pleasant to walk round in about ninety minutes; combine it with the neighbouring Grande Galerie.
