Institut du Monde Arabe
Opened in 1987, the Institut du Monde Arabe grew out of an agreement between France and eighteen Arab countries. Jean Nouvel's building is famous for its south façade of 240 panels with metal diaphragms inspired by mashrabiya screens, designed to open and close with the light — a complex mechanism now partly fixed.
Inside, the museum traces the history of the Arab world from prehistory to the present, alongside a library, media centre and strong temporary exhibitions. Tip: the ninth-floor terrace is free to enter and offers one of the finest views of the apse of Notre-Dame, the Île Saint-Louis and the Seine.
