The Île Saint-Louis was formed in the 17th century by merging two uninhabited islets, the Île aux Vaches and the Île Notre-Dame, where cattle once grazed. A development scheme launched in 1614 by the contractor Christophe Marie laid out a grid plan, immediately built up with private mansions.
