A long island in the Seine at Chatou, the Île des Impressionnistes takes its name from the painters who came out by train from Paris in the 1870s. Renoir painted the Luncheon of the Boating Party here at the Maison Fournaise, then a riverside inn and boating restaurant.
Today you walk between wooded banks, landing stages and restored buildings, in a riverside atmosphere quite unlike the Paris quays. Tip: reach it on foot from RER A at Rueil-Malmaison or Chatou, and walk right around the island along the Croissy-side bank.
