Hôtel Lambert
Commissioned in 1640 by the financier Jean-Baptiste Lambert from Louis Le Vau, the Hôtel Lambert occupies the eastern tip of the Île Saint-Louis. Le Vau brilliantly resolved a triangular site and called on Le Brun and Le Sueur for the Hercules gallery and the Cabinet of Love — decorative schemes that anticipate Versailles.
Voltaire stayed here with Émilie du Châtelet; in the 19th century the Czartoryski family made it the centre of Polish emigration, where Chopin played. A fire badly damaged it in 2013, followed by restoration. Tip: the mansion is private and cannot be visited; its mass and gardens are visible from quai d'Anjou and the Pont de Sully.
