Collège des Bernardins
Founded in 1248 by Cistercian monks to house their students, the Collège des Bernardins preserves a Gothic nave over seventy metres long, carried on two rows of slender columns, along with the former sacristy and vaulted cellar.
After the Revolution the building served as a prison, a warehouse and a fire station before an exemplary restoration completed in 2008. It now hosts exhibitions, concerts and debates. Tip: entry to the nave is free; come on a weekday late morning, when light crosses the bays and the space is nearly empty.
