Cimetière de Picpus
The Picpus Cemetery, in the 12th arrondissement, is the largest private cemetery in Paris. It holds the remains of 1,306 victims of the Terror guillotined at Place de la Nation in June-July 1794, buried in two mass graves.
The Marquis de Lafayette, hero of American independence, is also buried here; his grave is decorated with an American flag renewed every 4th of July. Descendants of the guillotined can still be buried on the site.
Tip: small entry fee. Allow 30 minutes. Combine with Place de la Nation and the Coulée Verte, both nearby.
