Vaux-le-Vicomte is a 17th-century château built for Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV's superintendent of finances, by architect Le Vau, decorator Le Brun and landscaper Le Nôtre. The lavish party held in 1661 for its inauguration is said to have triggered Fouquet's downfall, as he was arrested shortly after on the king's order, who later drew inspiration from the estate for Versailles.
