Café de Flore
Opened around 1887 and named after a statue of the goddess Flora that once stood opposite, the Café de Flore became the surrealists' headquarters around André Breton between the wars, before being adopted by Sartre and Beauvoir, who wrote here daily on the upper floor.
Its Art Deco interior — red banquettes, mahogany, mirrors — has not changed since the 1930s. The quieter first floor remains the regulars' refuge. The café awards the Prix de Flore to a young writer. Tip: less crowded than Les Deux Magots a hundred metres away, and pleasanter at breakfast than at apéritif hour.
