Perched on a rocky outcrop at the heart of Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, the belvedere — a small circular temple inspired by the Temple of Sibyl at Tivoli — crowns an artificial cliff created when former gypsum quarries were landscaped under the Second Empire. It is reached via winding paths, a suspension bridge and a stone footbridge.
The view takes in the lake, the park's canopy and, in the distance, the Montmartre hill and Sacré-Cœur. It is one of the least known and most photogenic viewpoints in eastern Paris. Tip: go up via the suspension bridge and come down past the grotto and its waterfall for a complete loop in about thirty minutes.
