Basilique de Saint-Denis
Rebuilt from 1135 by Abbot Suger around the tomb of Saint Denis, the basilica is regarded as the first Gothic building: here the pointed arch, rib vault and stained glass as a source of theological light appear together for the first time.
It is above all the necropolis of the kings of France: more than seventy recumbent effigies and Renaissance tombs, from Dagobert to Louis XVIII, desecrated during the Revolution and later regrouped by Alexandre Lenoir. The north spire, dismantled in 1846, is being rebuilt. Tip: the nave is free, the necropolis ticketed; allow an hour and a half and come in the morning for the choir windows.
